Entropion is the inward turning of the eyelid, causing the lashes to rub against the eye surface. This constant friction causes pain, irritation, and — if left untreated — can scar the cornea and permanently damage vision.
When the Eyelid Turns Inward
Unlike ectropion (outward turning), entropion causes the eyelid margin to roll inward — directing the eyelashes toward the eye surface. Every blink drags the lashes across the sensitive conjunctiva and cornea, causing constant irritation.
The most common cause is age-related loosening of the eyelid tendons (involutional entropion). Entropion can also develop after infection, scarring, or trauma.
⚠ Urgent: Entropion should be evaluated promptly. Chronic corneal scratching can cause permanent scarring, ulceration, and vision loss.

Surgical Correction
The repair repositions the eyelid to restore normal anatomy. Techniques include tightening the eyelid tendons (lateral tarsal strip) or suturing the lower retractors to rotate the lid outward. Surgery takes approximately 30–60 minutes under local anesthesia.
After Surgery
Some swelling and bruising will resolve within 1–2 weeks. Antibiotic eye drops are prescribed. Most patients notice immediate relief from the scratching sensation. A follow-up exam confirms eyelid position and healing progress.
