Limbal Relaxing Incisions (LRIs)
LRIs are micro-incisions made at the edge of the cornea to reduce astigmatism — often performed alongside cataract surgery to help patients see more clearly at all distances with less dependence on glasses.
Correcting Astigmatism at the Time of Cataract Surgery
Astigmatism occurs when the cornea is unevenly curved — like a football instead of a basketball — causing blurry or distorted vision at all distances. LRIs involve making one or two small incisions at the limbus (the edge of the cornea) to gently reshape it and reduce the uneven curvature.
The incisions are less than 1mm long and are made with a diamond blade or a femtosecond laser. The cornea naturally relaxes into a more spherical shape as it heals — improving vision clarity and reducing the need for corrective lenses.

Before, During & After Your LRI Procedure
Preparation
- →Comprehensive eye exam and astigmatism measurement
- →Your surgeon maps the cornea to determine incision placement
- →Stop certain eye drops or medications as directed
The Procedure
- →Performed under local anesthesia (usually alongside cataract surgery)
- →One or two micro-incisions made at the limbus
- →Antibiotic drops applied to conclude the procedure
- →Takes approximately 5 minutes (excluding preparation)
Recovery
- →Mild blurry vision or light sensitivity for a few days
- →Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops prescribed
- →Avoid rubbing eyes and swimming for several weeks
- →Most patients return to normal activities the next day
