Blepharospasm & Hemifacial Spasm
Involuntary spasms of the eyelid and facial muscles can be debilitating — affecting vision, work, and quality of life. BOTOX® injections delivered by a fellowship-trained oculoplastic specialist provide lasting relief.
Two Conditions
BEB vs. Hemifacial Spasm — What's the Difference?
Benign Essential Blepharospasm (BEB)
Involuntary blinking and eyelid closure affecting both eyes
Spasms originate in the brain's basal ganglia (neurological)
Can cause functional blindness during severe episodes
Most common in middle-aged and older women
BOTOX® injections are the first-line treatment
Hemifacial Spasm (HFS)
Involuntary twitching of muscles on one side of the face
Usually caused by a blood vessel compressing the facial nerve
Typically starts around the eye and spreads to the cheek/mouth
BOTOX® provides excellent symptom control
Surgical decompression may be considered in select cases
Symptoms
Signs You May Have Blepharospasm or HFS
Uncontrollable blinking or eye squeezing
Twitching on one side of the face
Eyelid spasms that worsen with bright light
Difficulty keeping the eyes open
Spasms that worsen during stress or fatigue
Episodes of functional vision loss during spasms
Treatment: BOTOX® Injections
BOTOX® is injected into specific periocular muscles to temporarily weaken the overactive muscles causing the spasms. Results typically last 3–5 months, and treatment is repeated to maintain relief. When medically indicated, BOTOX® for blepharospasm and HFS is typically covered by insurance.
