Enucleation & Evisceration

Enucleation & Evisceration (Removal of Eye)

Eye Removal Surgery: Overview

Enucleation and evisceration are surgical procedures to remove a diseased eye. An enucleation procedure involves removing the entire eyeball. An evisceration procedure consists of the removal of the contents of the eye and the cornea while the outer covering is left intact.

Reasons for Removal

1. Painful Blind Eye
In some cases, blind eyes become extremely painful due to increased pressure. When medical management fails, enucleation of the eye often provides dramatic and lasting pain relief.

2. Cosmetically Unacceptable Blind Eye
A blind eye will sometimes shrink or appear unsightly for other reasons. Most of the time, the removed eye is replaced with a prosthetic (or artificial) eye.

3. Severely Infected Blind Eye
Sometimes, a blind eye will become severely infected, and there is no hope of recovery. In these cases, the eye is removed to prevent the spread of infection to other parts of the body.

4. Tumor
Some eyes develop cancerous growths and are removed to prevent the cancer from spreading. When this is the case, complete removal of the eyeball is necessary.
